Principles of Design: Use these to organize your collages!

Principles of Design

The principles of design are tools to help you arrange the various elements in your collages to create a powerful message.

You must use these techniques in your second and third collages to help organize your images.

Benchmark 2: Argument #1Collage, due 10/20,21

Due Next Class:

Use photoshop to make a collage for your first debate argument. Your collage must use images to give a complete picture of the evidence supporting Argument 1.

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

To Do Today: 10/14

1) Identify main details in your evidence articles:

  • Which people does this issue affect?
  • Think about people who agree with this argument-- how do they see the world differently than you do?
  • Where does this take place? Is the location important to the story?
  • Which important ideas or concepts can't be shown literally? What can symbolize them?
2) Find images that summarize your evidence article.
3) photoshop your collage

Exhibition Benchmark #2: First Argument Collage

As you are researching your Pro & Con arguments for the debate, you and your partner will be responsible to create 6 collages (3 for each of you) which show the major arguments visually.

For example, if one of your PRO arguments for capital punishment is that "the death penalty prevents crime", you might find a research article about a real situation in which someone chose not to kill because they fear the death penalty.

The assignment is to create a collage (much like the Troy Davis collage) where you tell the story of your "would-be killer" in a single image.

These will be due one week from today.

Elements of Design activity.

Read the Elements of Design tutorial here. Use the design program of your choice (I suggest Keynote) and make 5 single frames (abstract art is OK) that use the Elements of Design to communicate one of the feelings or ideas below. Label each frame with the relationship and the elements that you manipulated to get your effect. Post them to your blog as "Elements of Design activity".

winner/loser

order/disorder

many/ few

“in” crowd/ loner

“a dime a dozen”

As you complete your Troy Davis photoshopped collage today, experiment by using these tools of design consciously to heighten the message of your work.

Complete the image and post it to your blog as Exhibition Benchmark 1: Troy Davis"
